I was interviewed this week by my colleague Rabbi Richard Address, the convener of The Seekers of Meaning Television Show and Podcast as part of a series of interviews he conducts on Jewish Sacred Aging. He invited me to discuss with him my newest book, Finding Your Moral Compass – Jewish Values for the 21st Century, published by the University of Toronto New Jewish Press (2026).

I wish to thank Richard for giving me the opportunity to speak with him and his audience about a subject that I have spent my life struggling to understand as a moral and ethical human being, a Jew, rabbi, liberal Zionist leader in the United States, and as a lover of the people and State of Israel.

This book, representing more than 50 years of my learning, teaching adults and children, and leading Jewish communities in San Francisco, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles, is a source book written in a relatable manner for our people as well as for Christians, Muslims, and anyone who wishes to understand what liberal Judaism and liberal Zionism means and what it offers in an age of massive corruption from the highest levels of the American government.

I offer 40 short chapters on 40 foundational values that Judaism has addressed over a period of 3000 years. I include classic Jewish texts set within the context of my experience from childhood to leading congregations and in my leadership as a former national chair of the Association of Reform Zionists of America and as a former co-chair of the Clergy Cabinet of the pro-Israel, pro-democracy, and pro-peace American political organization J Street. At the end of each chapter, I offer quotations from world religions and literature on each value and discussion questions for high school through adult learners in synagogues, churches, mosques, and universities, for Jews-by-choice and those interested in the essential values that characterize liberal Judaism in North America today.

The book is available from the University of Toronto New Jewish Press or on Amazon. I hope you will acquire a copy for yourself and for anyone you believe may benefit from reading it. Thanks in advance.
